Sermon Notes for Sunday November 23

Dear friends,

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.” This is the well known “shema” from the Hebrew word ‘hear’. Jesus said this was the greatest commandment (Mark 12:28-34). As Christians we are never to doubt that we are monotheists. Yet this is where we meet mystery, something that is not mysterious as in a detective mystery but something which has not been fully revealed to us.
Remember the New Testament is hidden in the Old so we get hints to the Three Person God in seeing the activity of the “Angel of the Lord”. Read in Genesis 18. Three men, three angels, yet one is the LORD. We easily see that more than one person is God. Note also the experience of Hagar in Genesis 16: 7-13, and who stopped Abraham from killing Isaac in Genesis 22:11, 15?
Remember Moses: And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. (Exo. 3:2) In Exodus 3:6, 14 – Moses heard at the burning bush ‘I am the God of thy father…’ and goes on to reveal himself as “I AM THAT I AM”. Well, who is talking with Moses, the LORD or the Angel of the Lord?
A good exercise is to look up the Name: ‘Angel of the Lord’ in
a concordance and see that He does what only God can do. This Angel reveals Himself as God Himself, and so we have to conclude that in some real sense God is sent by God.
A famous passage is Isaiah 61:1ff – The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor,
Jesus states plainly (Luke 4:16-22) this passage is talking about him. Does Jesus anoint himself? Does he place the Spirit on himself?
We will also we that the Hebrew word for one often means a unity as husband and wife becoming one flesh. They are not one person obviously, but remain separate, yet they are referred to as one.
Read over these many passages – the entrance of thy Word brings light – and I hope you will pursue this line of thought even more than suggested in this e-mail. Let’s explore the beauty of our three Person God so that our praise will be centered on His greatness, His holiness, His love, His power and not on our own plans and desires. I believe the more we see the wonderful complexity of our God through the careful reading of the Bible the more we will find true joy in our spirit.

See you Sunday,

Lee

P.S. I would like to offer a service of water Baptism. If you would like to be baptized please contact me so we can talk.
