Happy Mother’s Day! Even though we usually do Communion on the second Sunday, we believe that celebration is most conducive to in-person meetings and will resume when we can gather again.

CALL TO WORSHIP

PROVERBS 31:10-28

10   An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels.
11   The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.
12   She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.
13   She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands.
14   She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar.
15   She rises while it is yet night and provides food  for her household and portions for her maidens.
16   She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard.
17   She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong.
18   She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night.
19   She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle.
20   She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy.
21   She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household are clothed in scarlet.
22   She makes bed coverings for herself; her clothing is fine linen and purple.
23   Her husband is known in the gates when he sits among the elders of the land.
24   She makes linen garments and sells them; she delivers sashes to the merchant.
25  Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come.
26  She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
27  She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
 28  Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also praises her.

PRAISE & WORSHIP

BE MAGNIFIED by Lynn DeShazo

I have made You too small in my eyes—
Oh Lord, forgive me—
And I have believed in a lie
that You were unable to help me.

But now, oh Lord, I see my wrong.
Heal my heart and show Yourself strong;
and in my eyes and with my song,
Oh Lord, be magnified.
Oh Lord, be magnified!

Be magnified, oh Lord.
You are highly exalted
and there is nothing you can’t do.
Oh Lord, my eyes are on you.
Be magnified. Oh Lord, be magnified!

I have leaned on the wisdom of men.
Oh Lord, forgive me;
And I have responded to them
Instead of Your light and Your mercy.

But now, oh Lord, I see my wrong.
Heal my heart and show Yourself strong;
and in my eyes and with my song,
Oh Lord, be magnified.
Oh Lord, be magnified!

GOD WILL MAKE A WAY by Don Moen

God will make a way where there seems to be no way.
He works in ways we cannot see;
He will make a way for me.
He will be my guide, hold me closely to His side.
With love and strength for each new day,
He will make a way,
He will make a way.

By a roadway in the wilderness He’ll lead me,
and rivers in the desert will I see;
Heaven and earth will fade,
but His Word will still remain,
He will do something new today.

EVERLASTING by Brian Doerksen and Matt Unruh

From everlasting to everlasting, You are God;
From everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

In holiness You stand secure
through culture’s shifting sands,
unchanged by all the vanities of man;
And as the nations rise and fall,
Your sovereignty remains;
You are, You are, You are the one true God.

From everlasting to everlasting, You are God;
From everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

In faithfulness Your love extends
through times of turbulence,
adopting those who call upon Your name;
And every generation joins
in songs of grateful praise;
You are, You are, You are the one true God.

From everlasting to everlasting, You are God;
From everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

Eternal, immortal, invisible God. (repeat)

BREATHE (Words and music by Marie Barnett)

This is the air I breathe,
This is the air I breathe:
Your Holy presence living in me.

This is my daily bread,
This is my daily bread:
Your very word, spoken to me.

And I’m desperate for you
And I’m lost without you.

SERMON NOTES

ONE BIG IDEA
As we cling to the truth of God, we are empowered and equipped.

1) People will move further and further away from the truth of God.

2) Suffering is to be expected, but so is rescue!

3) All we need for life is found in the word of God.

RESPONSE TO THE PREACHED WORD

HOW FIRM A FOUNDATION (HYMN 268)

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
is laid for your faith in his excellent word!
What more can he say than to you he hath said,
to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

“Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed,
for I am thy God and will still give thee aid;
I’ll strengthen and help thee, and cause thee to stand
upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.

“When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
the rivers of woe shall not thee overflow;
for I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless,
and sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.

“When through fiery trials thy pathways shall lie,
my grace, all-sufficient, shall be thy supply;
the flame shall not hurt thee; I only design
thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.”

“The soul that on Jesus hath leaned on repose,
I will not, I will not desert to its foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I’ll never—no, never—no, never forsake!”

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Feel free to respond in prayer, aloud or silently, as the Lord leads.

IMMORTAL, INVISIBLE, GOD ONLY WISE (HYMN 34)

Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
Most blessèd, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
Nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might,
Thy justice, like mountains, high soaring above
Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.

To all, life thou givest, to both great and small;
In all life thou livest, the true life of all.
We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree
And wither and perish—but naught changeth thee.

Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,
Thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight.
All praise we would render—O help us to see
’Tis only the splendor of light hideth thee.
