PRELUDE

CALL TO WORSHIP

PROVERBS 1:2-7

2  To know wisdom and instruction,
to understand words of insight,

3  to receive instruction in wise dealing,
in righteousness, justice, and equity;

4  to give prudence to the simple,
knowledge and discretion to the youth—

5  Let the wise hear and increase in learning,
and the one who understands obtain guidance,

6  to understand a proverb and a saying,
the words of the wise and their riddles.

7  The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;
fools despise wisdom and instruction.

PRAISE & WORSHIP

WE BOW DOWN by Twila Paris

You are Lord of creation and Lord of my life,
Lord of the land and the sea.
You were Lord of the heaven before there was time
And Lord of all lords you will be.

We bow down and we worship You, Lord.  (Repeat 3 times)
Lord of all lords You will be.

You are King of creation and King of my life,
King of the land and the sea.
You were King of the heaven before there was time
And King of all kings you will be.

We bow down and we crown You the King. (Repeat 3 times)
King of all kings You will be.

GRAVES INTO GARDENS by Elevation Worship, Brandon Lake

I searched the world but it couldn’t fill me
Man’s empty praise and treasures that fade are never enough.
Then You came along and put me back together
And every desire is now satisfied here in Your love.

Oh, there’s nothing better than You, there’s nothing better than You!
Lord, there’s nothing, nothing is better than You.

I’m not afraid to show You my weakness, my failures and flaws, Lord; You’ve seen them all and You still call me friend
‘Cause the God of the mountain is the God of the valley
There’s not a place Your mercy and grace won’t find me again.

You turn mourning to dancing, You give beauty for ashes,
You turn shame into glory, You’re the only one who can.
You turn mourning to dancing, You give beauty for ashes,
You turn shame into glory. You’re the only one who can.

You turn graves into garden, You turn bones into armies,
You turn seas into highways. You’re the only one who can.

YOU ARE MY VISION by Rend Collective

You are my vision, O king of my heart!
Nothing else satisfies, only You, Lord.
You are my best thought by day or by night—
Waking or sleeping, Your presence, my light.

You are my wisdom, You are my true word,
I ever with You, and You with me, Lord.
You’re my great Father, and I’m Your true son;
You dwell inside me, together we’re one.

You are my battle-shield, sword for the fight.
You are my dignity, You’re my delight.
You’re my soul’s shelter and You’re my high tower.
Come, raise me heavenward, O Power of my power!

I don’t want riches or a man’s empty praise;
You’re my inheritance, now and always.
You and You only, the first in my heart,
High king of heaven, my treasure You are.

High king of heaven, when victory’s won
May I reach heaven’s joy, O bright heaven’s Son!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my vision, O ruler of all.

SERMON NOTES

THE DICHOTOMY BETWEEN “CHEAP GRACE” AND “COSTLY GRACE”:
“Cheap grace is the grace we bestow on ourselves…grace without discipleship. … Costly grace is the gospel for which we must sacrifice ourselves again and again, the girl (you want as a wife) must be pursued, you must work to eat. … It is costly because it costsa person his life,
and it is grace because it gives us the only true life.”
THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP BY DIETRICH BONHOEFFER

“A godly father’s counsel to his son…
24 times in Proverbs – listen to the LORD

Receive, treasure, attend, incline, and seek it like you would financial security
The pearl of great price

Let’s get to the “then” (verse 5)
Knowing the LORD is everything

How do we get wisdom?
“And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayers.”

Let’s set our daily schedule to reflect the search for wisdom. It will not come if we do not search for it. Out of a thankful heart will come a desire to please God by living a life of purity, kindness, and trust.

RESPONSE TO THE PREACHED WORD

NOTHING I HOLD ONTO by Will Reagan

I lean not on my own understanding;
My life is in the hands of the maker of heaven.

I give it all to You, God,
Trusting that You’ll make something beautiful out of me. Oh yeah!

I will climb this mountain with my hands wide open.
There’s nothing I hold onto, there’s nothing I hold onto.

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER

HOW GREAT THOU ART (HYMN 37)

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy pow’r throughout the universe displayed!

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees,
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze,

And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in—
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin!

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration
And there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art!
